Flowering dogwood (Cornus florida) as white walnut. has very large (3/4-1 inch) scaly terminal buds (left) at the ends of its stems. This tree has opposite budscales and leaves that are palmately compound, arranged like the fingers of your hand. Unlike the terminal bud, the axillary buds (middle photo) are vey small, setting at the top of the bud scale. The bark of yellow buckeye is very scaly and is often covered with algae and/or lichen.
