Ring Pink Mussel Reconnaissance

Dr. Kessler recently received a grant from the US Fish & Wildlife Service to fund research that will determine the distribution of a rare mussel (the ring pink) in the upper Green River.   Beginning in May, we will initiate a series of samples at various sites in the upper Green searching for the ring pink mussel.  This effort will involve a lot of different techniques including snorkeling and scuba.  Professor Alan Reed has extensive training and experience with freshwater mussels.  He and John McDermond will be searching for mussels in deeper water while others will snorkel in shallow water or simply visually search in very shallow water.  This effort will be repeated through the summer and will require the assistance of an many students as we can get.  Some equipment will be furnished.  Dr. Kessler will be administering this grant  and will be able to tell you more about work opportunities.
